Visakhapatnam is observing the 41st National Eye Donation Fortnight, a 15-day campaign running from August 25 to September 8. During this period, the District Blindness Control Society and Mohsin Eye Bank are actively raising public awareness about the profound impact of eye donation. According to Dr. V. Meenakshi, Superintendent of the Government Regional Eye Hospital, a single donation can restore vision for up to four people. This significant initiative aims to educate the community on the critical window for donation, which is within six hours following a person's death.
An awareness rally was recently organized, commencing from Kali Mata Temple at RK Beach and concluding at the YMCA. This event, flagged off by District Medical and Health Officer Dr. P. Jagadeeswara Rao and Dr. Meenakshi, saw approximately 700 participants, including doctors, students, and healthcare staff. Pamphlets were distributed, and slogans were raised to underscore the value of eye donation, encouraging more people to consider this life-changing act of generosity.
