Eye Cancer Caught Early: Mom's Sight Saved
18 Feb
Summary
- A quick flash and blurred vision led to an eye cancer diagnosis.
- A last-minute appointment at Boots Opticians saved her sight.
- Early detection allowed for less aggressive treatment.

A 51-year-old mother of six from Swindon narrowly avoided losing her sight, and potentially her life, thanks to a prompt eye examination. Tammy Jackson experienced a "quick flash" followed by blurred vision, which were later identified as symptoms of eye cancer.
She received a last-minute appointment at Boots Opticians on September 27, 2025, where an optometrist detected swelling in her right eye and referred her to Great Western Hospital. Further tests at the hospital and later at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London confirmed a diagnosis of small choroidal melanoma.
Tammy's treatment, ophthalmic plaque brachytherapy, began on November 13, 2025. Because the cancer was caught so early, the radioactive plaque was only on for a day and a half. She now has a good prognosis, with follow-up appointments scheduled.
