Summary
- Experimental exosome therapy aided severe burn recovery.
- Treatment involves injected particles to accelerate healing.
- This innovative approach avoids skin grafting and scarring.

In December 2025, Western University student Kaitlin Jeffrey experienced severe burns to her face and neck following a fraternity house fire. Transferred to Hamilton General Hospital, she became the first patient worldwide to receive an innovative exosome treatment designed to expedite healing.
This novel therapy employs exosomes, microscopic cell-derived particles that promote tissue repair and reduce inflammation. Doctors injected these particles into the injured areas, a method lauded as superior to conventional skin grafting which often leads to scarring. Dr. Marc Jeschke emphasized avoiding skin grafts for Jeffrey, especially on her face and neck.
Jeffrey received two treatments using exosomes sourced from the United States. The results were described as remarkable by medical experts. Jeffrey expressed her gratitude and hope that this exosome therapy will become a standard care option in Canada and globally.
She referred to her recovery as a "miracle" and believes this treatment will significantly improve the lives of future burn patients. The therapy offers a chance to move forward positively after devastating injuries.
