Mix Up Workouts for Longer Life
16 Apr
Summary
- Varied physical activities linked to longer lifespan, new study shows.
- Greatest variety of exercise cut all-cause death risk by nearly 20%.
- Multiple exercise types may help extend lifespan, researchers conclude.

Engaging in a variety of physical activities, rather than repeating the same exercise, may significantly contribute to a longer lifespan, according to recent findings. Research suggests that the diversity of one's workout routine plays a crucial role in longevity.
A comprehensive study analyzed data from the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, tracking over 170,000 participants for more than 30 years. Participants reported on various activities including walking, running, cycling, swimming, and racquet sports, alongside weight training and lower-intensity exercises.
The study found that higher overall activity levels and most individual exercise types were associated with a reduced risk of death. However, the benefits were most pronounced for those with the greatest variety of physical activities.
After accounting for total activity levels, participants who engaged in the widest range of exercises experienced a nearly 20% lower risk of death from all causes. They also showed reduced risks for death from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory issues.
While this observational study cannot establish direct causation, the researchers concluded that long-term engagement in multiple types of physical activity appears to support extended lifespans.
