Doctors Save Punjab IG After Self-Inflicted Gunshot

Former Punjab Police IG Amar Singh Chahal is recovering after a life-saving emergency surgery at Park Hospital, Patiala. He was admitted with a self-inflicted gunshot injury to his chest, sustaining a significant wound and losing about 1.5 liters of blood. A specialized medical team, led by a cardiothoracic surgeon, performed a complex procedure lasting three to four hours to repair a torn lung and address chest wall fractures.

The surgery was high-risk due to the bullet's trajectory near the heart and major blood vessels. Doctors noted that survival rates for such injuries are typically low. The prompt decision by the family to bring him to the nearest super-specialty hospital, rather than a more distant facility, was critical. Immediate resuscitation and intensive care further contributed to the successful outcome.

Following the operation, Chahal was placed on ventilator support for two days before being successfully extubated. He is now stable, off the ventilator, and consuming soft food. Doctors anticipate a full recovery within approximately one week, highlighting the effectiveness of the swift medical intervention.
