Doctor struck off still performs circumcisions

Summary
- A doctor removed from medical register continues private circumcisions.
- Campaigners cite catastrophic safeguarding failure due to lack of regulation.
- Former doctor's private business operates legally without medical training requirement.

A doctor who was removed from the medical register due to a "reckless" circumcision that endangered a toddler's life is now operating a private circumcision business. Campaigners have labelled this a "catastrophic failure of safeguarding," emphasizing the urgent need for regulation concerning the procedure. Zuber Bux, formerly a senior GP partner, was struck off by the General Medical Council in 2021 following a serious misconduct finding. The GMC panel described his approach as "cavalier," leading to a 15-month-old boy being hospitalized in a life-threatening condition. Bux's misconduct also included "financially motivated dishonesty" related to bogus sicknotes.
Despite the severe sanctions, Bux, aged 55, continues to legally advertise as a "circumcision practitioner" in north-west England. His practice is permitted because there is no legal requirement for circumcisers to possess medical training. This situation echoes similar cases, such as Mohammad Siddiqui, another ex-doctor struck off for botched circumcisions, who also continued his practice and was later imprisoned for causing "gratuitous pain and suffering." Concerns are mounting nationally, with the Crown Prosecution Service considering classifying circumcision as potential child abuse due to the lack of oversight.
