Neurologist Warns: 3 Everyday Habits That Can Damage Your Brain
11 Nov
Summary
- Wearing headphones for extended periods or to bed can damage hearing and increase dementia risk
- Poor gum health linked to higher stroke and cognitive decline risk
- Sitting too long on the toilet can reduce blood flow to the brain

According to a neurologist, some everyday habits that may seem harmless can actually pose serious risks to brain health. In a recent Instagram post, Dr. Bing, a neurologist and biostatistician, highlighted three practices he strongly advises against.
First, Dr. Bing cautions against wearing headphones to bed, as loud sounds can damage the inner ear's hair cells and increase the risk of hearing loss and dementia over time. He also notes that headphones can trap moisture and bacteria, leading to ear infections.
Secondly, the neurologist emphasizes the importance of maintaining good gum health. Recent studies have found that people with more gum disease and cavities have almost double the risk of stroke, and poor oral health has also been linked to dementia and cognitive decline.
Lastly, Dr. Bing warns against sitting on the toilet for more than 5 minutes, as this can cause blood to pool in the legs and reduce blood flow to the brain, potentially leading to fainting. He advises against this practice, except for those with chronic bowel conditions who may not have a choice.
The neurologist reveals that he sees examples of these brain-damaging habits on a weekly basis, and he strongly recommends that people avoid them to protect their cognitive health.
