Evening OPDs Expand: More Hospitals to Offer Late Care
10 Jun
Summary
- Evening OPD services at GMSH-16 have seen over 100 patients daily.
- Plans are underway to launch evening OPDs at Manimajra and other civil hospitals.
- Financial viability and staffing are concerns for expanding evening OPDs to dispensaries.

Evening outpatient department (OPD) services, initiated at the Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16 (GMSH-16) in February 2025, have demonstrated significant success. This initiative, running from 5 pm to 7 pm, averages over 100 patient visits daily, offering services in medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, and gynaecology.
Following the positive outcome, the health department is planning to extend these convenient evening hours to the civil hospital in Manimajra. Discussions are also in progress to introduce evening OPDs at civil hospitals in Sector 22 and Sector 45, though specific timelines have not yet been established.
Despite the planned expansion, a proposal from last year to initiate evening OPDs in city dispensaries, aimed at assisting labourers and daily wagers, has faced delays. Concerns regarding the financial feasibility and the requirement of dedicated staff for each dispensary are contributing factors.
Patients like Suneel Kumar and Kunal have expressed the need for evening healthcare access, highlighting how it would save them time and allow them to manage their work and job-hunting schedules more effectively. This feedback underscores the demand for accessible healthcare outside regular working hours.
