Europe's Kids Losing Strength: A Health Crisis Unfolds
31 Jul
Summary
- European children show declining physical fitness in strength and flexibility.
- Study spans 20 European countries from 1965 to 2023.
- Over 75% of European adolescents fail WHO daily activity recommendations.

Physical fitness levels among children and adolescents in Europe have significantly declined, according to a recent study. Researchers observed a worrying trend in key health indicators, including muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition, from 1990 to the present.
Data from 417,362 participants across 20 European countries, spanning from 1965 to 2023, indicate a steady decrease in upper-body strength and a consistent rise in body fat since the 1970s. Flexibility has shown the most alarming deterioration, with a marked acceleration in decline since 2000.
While cardiorespiratory fitness showed signs of stabilization between 2015 and 2023, levels remain below historical averages. The study emphasizes that childhood fitness is crucial for long-term health, linking it to reduced risks of cardiovascular disease and mortality later in life. However, over 75% of European adolescents fail to meet the World Health Organization's recommendation of at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity.
