New Hospital Dept Faces Financial Strain
4 Mar
Summary
- New gastroenterology department encounters financial hurdles.
- Voluntary services of a single doctor currently manage high patient load.
- NGO sponsorship sought to cover operational costs and equipment.

Ernakulam General Hospital's new Gastroenterology department is currently facing financial difficulties. Key challenges involve establishing a sustainable revenue stream and building adequate staff strength.
The department, located in the super-speciality block, has seen considerable patient interest through walk-ins. However, services are presently confined to internal referrals from physicians and surgeons within the hospital and the adjacent cancer centre.
Superintendent Dr. Shahirsha R. emphasized the department's focus on cost-effective treatment for the needy. Currently, a single doctor is volunteering to manage a high patient load, with plans to introduce more equipment. The department aims to minimize financial burdens on patients.
Dr. T. Paulose George, a retired consultant, oversees operations voluntarily, prioritizing clinical needs. He noted that expanding services to the public depends on government appointments for more gastroenterologists. Sustainable revenue is crucial due to the expense of services and equipment maintenance.
An NGO has committed to covering a portion of the department's running expenses. Initial diagnostic services are available, with colonoscopy and therapeutic endoscopy expected to launch soon. The department operates from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
