Lincoln Tops UK Stress List, New Study Shows
13 Mar
Summary
- Lincoln is England's 'stress capital', study finds.
- Manchester ranks second due to physical health issues.
- Mental health concerns heavily impact Eastbourne's ranking.

New research by Darwin Escapes has identified Lincoln as England's most stressed city, surpassing expectations that London might hold this title. The study, which analyzed data from the Office for National Statistics, ranked areas based on mental health, physical health, money, and work factors.
Lincoln's stress levels are significantly driven by its low scores in mental well-being, with residents reporting low happiness and life satisfaction. The city also faces financial pressures, indicated by a gross disposable household income per head of £18,178, placing it among the lowest in the study.
Manchester secured the second position, with its ranking influenced by physical health metrics, including a high preventable cardiovascular mortality rate. Economic factors such as a 25.5% economic inactivity rate and a low disposable household income further contribute to its stressful profile.
Other locations in the top five for stress include Eastbourne, Spelthorne, and Hastings. Eastbourne and Hastings show significant mental health pressures, while Spelthorne is noted as the worst place in the UK for mental health stress, with the highest average anxiety scores reported.
Conversely, Mole Valley in Surrey was named the least stressed place in the UK, benefiting from low anxiety and high disposable income. Other areas like Sevenoaks and Castle Point also ranked favorably for lower stress levels.
