Flu Hospitalizations Surge 55% in England

The number of individuals hospitalized with influenza in England has reached unprecedented levels for this time of year, showing a concerning 55% increase within a single week. Daily admissions averaged 2,660 patients, a sharp rise from 1,717 the prior week. This marks a significant escalation compared to previous years.

In response to the escalating flu situation, several hospitals have reinstated mandatory mask-wearing for all individuals on their premises. This measure aims to mitigate the transmission of the virus amidst high patient volumes and ongoing pressures on healthcare services. Some facilities have also experienced critical incident status due to high A&E attendance.

The surge in flu cases occurs as the National Health Service also contends with the possibility of resident doctors initiating a strike over pay and job disputes. Health Secretary Wes Streeting has presented a last-minute offer to the British Medical Association, including expanded training posts and reimbursement for expenses, in an effort to avert the industrial action.
