Cancer Care Lottery Ends: Training Boost for Deprived Areas
23 Jan
Summary
- Cancer specialist training to expand in England's most deprived areas.
- New diagnostic technologies to be scrutinized for NHS rollout.
- Initiative aims to prevent cancer, speed diagnosis, and improve outcomes.

England's forthcoming National Cancer Plan aims to rectify disparities in cancer care by expanding specialist training in the most deprived areas. This initiative seeks to dismantle the 'postcode lottery,' ensuring equitable access to quality treatment regardless of a patient's location.
Additional training places will be established at under-served NHS trusts, focusing on rural and coastal communities. Health Secretary Wes Streeting affirmed the commitment to providing these patients the same survival chances and quality of life as others.
New diagnostic technologies, including AI for lung cancer detection and software for analyzing tissue samples, will be evaluated by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) starting from April 2027. This will accelerate the rollout of proven, cost-effective health tech across the NHS.
