30 Sep
Summary
- Endometriosis, an inflammatory disease, affects more than just periods.
- Charlotte McCann left career due to severe, intolerable pain.
- A £2.3m UK-wide study trials new pain management for endometriosis.
Endometriosis, a debilitating inflammatory disease, has profoundly impacted Charlotte McCann's life since age 14, forcing her to leave her career due to severe, intolerable pain. Symptoms included waking up vomiting and days where she was unable to stand or leave bed.
This condition is a mythically misunderstood painful period ailment. It is a system-wide inflammatory disease where cells similar to the womb's lining grow elsewhere in the body, such as on the bowel or lungs, creating painful sores. Diagnosis often takes years, and with no cure, women grapple with pain affecting their relationships, work, education, and mental health.
Now 27, Charlotte is participating in a new pain management programme. This initiative is part of a £2.3 million UK-wide study, co-led by the University of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian. The trial aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with endometriosis by investigating whether personalized plans, incorporating pain medication and physiotherapy, can offer effective relief.
