In Eluru district, authorities are launching a stringent crackdown on scanning centers suspected of violating the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act. This action comes in the wake of 1,499 abortions registered in 2025, prompting the Medical and Health Department to initiate a thorough investigation.
District Collector K. Vetri Selvi has directed the Police and Medical and Health departments to implement stricter enforcement measures. Citing an alarming sex ratio of 934:1,000, the Collector emphasized the need to book all offenders. Decoy parties will be deployed to apprehend centers performing scans in violation of the Act.
Furthermore, Drug Control Administration officers are tasked with monitoring medical shops to prevent the sale of drugs without prescriptions. Medical officers will conduct case-wise investigations into the abortions, gathering details on reasons, locations, timing, and adherence to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Act, 2021.
Public awareness campaigns will also be conducted regarding the PCPNDT Act and a toll-free number, 18004256131, has been established for reporting illegal activities. This multi-pronged approach aims to curb violations and improve the district's demographic balance.
