Edmonton Surgical Cuts Loom as Hospitalist Funding Ends
11 Mar
Summary
- Surgical hospitalists warn of immediate cancellations starting mid-March.
- Funding model changes for hospitalists may cause patient care fragmentation.
- Government committed to collaboration but addresses compensation concerns.
Physicians in Alberta's Edmonton Zone have alerted health ministers to impending surgical cancellations and potential disruptions to patient care, expected within weeks. A letter sent on February 11th by surgical hospitalists warns that the termination of their current funding model, which combines stipend and fee-for-service, will necessitate surgical cancellations starting around mid-March for patient safety.
These changes could lead to fragmented care and place additional burdens on emergency rooms, surgical teams, internal medicine, and ICUs. The hospitalists, predominantly family physicians, argue that the end of their stipend contracts by March 31, 2026, means they may not continue providing services previously covered by these stipends.
The government has indicated a commitment to working with physicians to ensure stable patient care during the transition away from legacy stipend arrangements and towards alternative relationship plans. However, specific questions regarding compensation and potential health-care disruptions were not directly addressed.
This situation echoes a separate, ongoing disruption at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, where resident physician withdrawal from on-call shifts has caused cancellations for 20 months. A proposed solution to add hospitalist coverage was previously rejected by AHS leadership.
