Mould Found in Edinburgh Children's Hospital: Investigation Underway
24 Mar
Summary
- Mould discovered behind wall coverings in bathrooms of Edinburgh children's cancer ward.
- Patients are vulnerable due to weakened immune systems; precautionary measures are in place.
- NHS Lothian assures low risk, but enhanced infection control and monitoring are ongoing.

An investigation has been launched following the discovery of mould behind wall coverings in bathrooms on the Lochranza ward at the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People in Edinburgh. This ward serves oncology and haematology patients.
Precautionary measures have been implemented to safeguard vulnerable patients with compromised immune systems. NHS Lothian has confirmed that no patients have become unwell as a result of this discovery. Families have been kept informed of the ongoing situation.
The mould is believed to have resulted from a defective join allowing water ingress, though walls remain intact and waterproof coverings provided a barrier. Enhanced infection control measures, including filtered air, are in place. A low risk has been assessed, but monitoring is close, and patients may be moved during remedial work.
