A family holiday in Sharm El Sheikh turned into a harrowing ordeal when 10-year-old Jude Lawton developed a severe E.coli infection. What began as a seemingly common upset stomach worsened significantly during their flight home, marked by bloody stools and extreme fatigue. Upon arrival in the UK, Jude's condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his admission to the hospital.
Doctors diagnosed Jude with STEC E.coli, which progressed to haemolytic uraemic syndrome, a severe complication causing kidney failure. He was transferred to Alder Hey Children's Hospital, where he underwent dialysis and a blood transfusion. After two weeks of intensive treatment, Jude's kidney function began to recover.
Jude was eventually discharged home but will be monitored for five years due to potential long-term health risks. His mother, Caroline Lawton, is sharing their story to raise awareness, emphasizing the importance of trusting parental instincts and seeking immediate medical care if warning signs like blood in stool, reduced urination, or swelling are observed.
