A US doctor, identified as Peter Stafford, has fully recovered from the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola after receiving treatment for over two weeks in Germany. He was admitted to Berlin's Charite hospital on May 20, having contracted the virus while working as a surgeon in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Stafford's family, initially classified as high-risk contacts, also completed their quarantine.
His recovery, described as a significant therapeutic success by hospital director Leif Erik Sander, involved experimental therapies currently under trial for this specific virus. Stafford expressed profound gratitude for his care, acknowledging the advanced treatment unavailable to many in the affected regions.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak, which began in eastern DRC and spread to Uganda, a public health emergency. As of recently, the DRC reported 488 cases and 86 deaths, while Uganda confirmed 19 cases and two deaths. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns this outbreak could become the largest on record.
