Ebola Spreads in Congo, Kenya Confirms Imported Case
11 Oct
Summary
- Ebola outbreak extends to new health zone in DRC's North Kivu.
- Kenya confirms a fatal imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease.
- Insecurity and mistrust hinder containment efforts in the DRC.
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has expanded, with the Alimbongo health zone in North Kivu province reporting cases for the first time. As of October 6, this zone recorded four confirmed cases, including two deaths, bringing the total across 64 health zones in seven provinces to 8,728 confirmed cases and 4,205 deaths.
Kenya has confirmed its first imported case of the Bundibugyo virus disease, a Kenyan national who fell ill in the DRC before traveling to Nairobi. This individual died on October 5, prompting isolation of contacts and enhanced surveillance in Kenya and Uganda.
Response efforts in the DRC face significant pressure from limited treatment capacity, insecurity, and community cooperation challenges. Misinformation and mistrust are undermining containment, with nearly 40 percent of new cases now in North Kivu, and a concerning number treated in non-specialized facilities lacking adequate resources.
Authorities are working to trace contacts, but follow-up rates are below the target of 85 percent. Community-centered approaches, including active case finding and sustained engagement, are stressed as vital for controlling the outbreak and preventing further cross-border transmission.
