According to World Health Organization officials, local transmission is now occurring in new health zones. Since the outbreak began on May 15, 676 confirmed cases and 136 deaths have been reported across Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces. The United Nations agency also noted 119 suspected cases, highlighting the virus's growing reach.
Efforts to contain the virus are hampered by insufficient isolation bed capacity and infrastructure challenges exacerbated by decades of conflict. The situation is particularly concerning in displacement camps, where cramped conditions raise fears of rapid contagion and potential panic. Neighboring Uganda has reported 19 cases and two deaths but claims to have the situation under control.
