The outbreak, which has infected over 6,250 individuals and resulted in 3,039 deaths, is driven by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola. Traditional risk assessments have been augmented by analyzing mobility data, which reveals connections between geographically distant areas based on travel patterns.
Swedish non-profit Flowminder analyzes aggregated, anonymized mobile records to estimate population movement. Early analyses accurately predicted case increases in destinations receiving the largest flows of travelers from initial hotspots.
The approach has helped identify risks in crucial hubs like Kisangani, enabling strengthened response operations before cases were detected. Recent studies also highlight potential spread to Kinshasa, the capital, and neighboring countries.
A limitation of the current analysis is its reliance on data from a single mobile operator, Vodacom. Efforts are underway to include data from other operators to provide a more comprehensive picture.
