The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently experiencing the third-largest Ebola outbreak in history, reporting 906 suspected cases and 223 fatalities as of May 27. This outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, is raising international concerns due to potential spread beyond Africa.
Health authorities are investigating suspected cases in Italy and Brazil, believed to be travellers returning from affected regions. An American national who tested positive while in the DRC is receiving treatment in Germany. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations has pledged over A$86 million to expedite the development of potential vaccines.
Factors contributing to the outbreak's spread include political instability, social unrest, transmission in healthcare settings, and traditional burial practices. Similar to the devastating 2014-16 West African outbreak, initial symptoms were non-specific, and rapid urban spread complicated containment efforts.
International travel has facilitated the virus's spread to neighboring Uganda, with nine cases and one death reported. Several countries, including the United States and Canada, have implemented travel restrictions and enhanced screening measures to prevent further dissemination.
While the risk of Ebola reaching Australia is considered very low, authorities are closely monitoring the situation. The global response has been swifter than in past outbreaks, potentially mitigating a catastrophic scale, though cases are still expected to rise before containment.
