Ebola Cases Surge in DRC and Uganda

The number of Ebola infections and deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda has surged rapidly since late May, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Since the last update on May 29, an additional 390 confirmed cases and 74 deaths were reported.
As of June 6, the DRC has documented 515 confirmed cases and 91 fatalities, with 12 individuals having recovered. These cases are spread across 25 health zones, with some infections located hundreds of miles from the Ituri province epicenter. Over 5,000 contacts have been identified and are undergoing tracing.
Uganda has reported 19 confirmed cases as of June 6, an increase of 10 cases since May 29. The WHO assesses the risk of transmission in the Congo as very high and high in neighboring countries, while the global risk remains low.
