Ebola Outbreak Surges Past West Africa's Deadliest

The World Health Organization has declared the current Ebola outbreak to be out of control, projecting it will surpass the devastating 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak, which claimed over 11,000 lives. This escalating situation has prompted aid groups like Doctors Without Borders to establish new treatment centers, such as one recently opened in Beni, North Kivu.

As of the current date, Congo has initiated a vaccination campaign for healthcare and other front-line workers using the Ervebo vaccine, known for its effectiveness against similar Ebola types. The outbreak, believed to have been spreading since February despite being declared in mid-May, has now expanded significantly from three health zones to nearly 60.

Most new cases and fatalities are occurring outside of monitored contacts, within communities, highlighting the challenges in containment. Despite government measures, advocacy groups emphasize the need for enhanced community trust-building efforts. Neighboring Uganda recently declared itself Ebola-free, but the WHO cautions that the risk of cross-border spread persists.

The Central African Republic is now identified as the country facing the highest risk of spillover, with South Sudan also at significant risk due to the outbreak's proximity to border areas in eastern Congo.
