Ebola Spreads Rapidly: WHO Raises Risk Alert
22 May
Summary
- WHO warns the Ebola outbreak in Congo is spreading rapidly.
- The outbreak poses a "very high" national risk, according to WHO.
- Local anger over burial protocols led to an attack on a treatment center.

The head of the World Health Organization announced that the Ebola outbreak centered in the Democratic Republic of Congo is rapidly spreading, leading the UN health agency to revise its risk assessment to "very high" at the national level. While the global risk remains low, the regional risk is high. In eastern Congo, fear and anger have fueled a crisis, with locals setting fire to an Ebola treatment center after being stopped from retrieving a body for traditional burial rites. This incident underscores the deep challenges health workers face in containing the rare virus, especially in an area already strained by inadequate health facilities and ongoing armed conflicts. The disease, spreading for weeks, has seen nearly 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths, with confirmed cases in neighboring Uganda also reported.
Containment efforts are hampered by the region's weak health infrastructure, exacerbated by international aid cuts. The current outbreak is attributed to the Bundibugyo strain, for which a vaccine is expected to be available in six to nine months. Health officials have not yet identified "patient zero," suggesting the outbreak may have started months ago. International travel restrictions have been imposed by the U.S., and the India-Africa Forum Summit has been postponed due to the evolving health situation. The Democratic Republic of Congo's soccer team also canceled training due to the outbreak, reflecting its widespread impact.
