Africa CDC Warns of Global Spread, Compares to Covid
28 Oct
Summary
- Africa CDC warns Ebola's spread is unprecedented, likening it to Covid-19.
- Over 10,000 Ebola cases and nearly 5,000 deaths recorded.
- Urgent funding of over $2 billion is needed to combat the outbreak.

Dr. Jean Kaseya, director general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), has warned that the Ebola outbreak's "unprecedented" geographical spread could lead to a global crisis akin to Covid-19. The outbreak has surpassed 10,000 cases with nearly 5,000 deaths, affecting three African regions simultaneously.
Kaseya emphasized that no country is safe and urged all nations to enhance their preparedness and treatment readiness. He drew parallels to the early days of Covid-19, when many countries underestimated the risk before becoming hotspots. This particular outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) involves the Bundibugyo virus.
The situation is complicated by a lack of adequate protective equipment, unpaid health worker wages leading to strikes, ongoing conflict in DR Congo, mistrust of officials, misinformation, and global aid cuts. Kaseya plans to convene African health ministers to advocate for increased cross-border cooperation, including screening at entry points.
He also called for a "corridor of peace" in conflict zones to allow health workers access to affected populations. Kaseya stressed that the outbreak affects everyone and requires a unified global response, including a significant increase in funding. Over $2 billion in pledged funds remains outstanding, with Kaseya warning that inaction will lead to trillions in costs if the outbreak spreads globally.
