Congo Camp Sees Unprecedented Deaths Amid Ebola Fears
19 Jun
Summary
- At least 30 people died since May in a Congo displacement camp.
- Symptoms suggest a rapid spread of Ebola, but testing was refused.
- Funding cuts for sanitation have increased disease vulnerability.

In northeastern Congo's Kigonze camp, an alarming and unprecedented death toll of at least 30 individuals has been recorded since the beginning of May. Residents of the camp, which houses over 15,000 displaced people, have displayed symptoms including headaches, fever, and vomiting, raising fears of a rapid Ebola outbreak.
Camp officials and aid organizations reported that initial efforts to test patients or the deceased were met with refusal, hindering confirmation of the cause of death. However, the cluster of symptoms is strongly associated with Ebola.
The dire situation is exacerbated by severe reductions in funding for essential water, hygiene, and sanitation (WASH) services. These cuts, particularly impacting facilities previously supported by the U.S., have left the camp's population highly exposed to rapidly spreading diseases.
Aid groups noted that WASH projects serving displaced populations in Ebola-affected provinces have been significantly scaled back or eliminated. This has led to critical shortages, including overflowing toilets, forcing residents to manage waste themselves in unsanitary conditions.
