Summary
- Many cancer types rising in adults under 50.
- New UK study seeks causes of early-onset bowel cancer.
- Participation involves periodic diet, lifestyle surveys.
A significant increase in lethal cancers among younger adults is prompting urgent research. Statistics reveal a concerning rise in various cancer types, including bowel, prostate, kidney, and breast cancers, in individuals under the age of 50. This trend, observed since the 1990s, is prompting experts to investigate the causes.
Nutritional scientist Professor Sarah Berry is leading Prospect UK, a large-scale research initiative across the United Kingdom. The study aims to recruit 250,000 participants aged 18 to 50 to explore how diet, lifestyle, environmental factors, and the gut microbiome influence the development of early-onset bowel cancer.
Known risk factors such as alcohol, physical inactivity, smoking, diet, and obesity account for a substantial portion of bowel cancer risk. However, many questions remain unanswered regarding other exposures. The Prospect UK study invites people to contribute by completing short questionnaires on their diet, lifestyle, and health every six months.
This global research effort, Team Prospect, is dedicated to understanding this worrying increase in younger adults. Participation in Prospect UK could lead to earlier identification of risk factors and improved prevention methods, ultimately helping to save lives.
