GBS Paralysis: From Zanzibar Beach to Near-Death Battle

In January 2023, a trip to Zanzibar took a sudden turn for a Dutch traveler when she developed severe headaches and unexplained numbness, followed by progressive paralysis. This led to a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a condition where the immune system attacks the body's nerves, suspected to have been triggered by a salmonella infection.

After initial tests in Zanzibar yielded no results, she was transferred to Nairobi, Kenya, for specialized treatment. There, an MRI and lumbar puncture confirmed the GBS diagnosis. During her hospitalization, she experienced hallucinations and felt unable to breathe, requiring intubation.

Complications arose when she contracted Pseudomonas, a bacterial infection, during intubation, severely damaging her lungs and eyes. This secondary infection placed her life in grave danger, as doctors struggled to find an effective antibiotic. Eventually, a treatment succeeded, and she began to recover.

Flown to the Netherlands on February 25, 2023, she remained hospitalized until April 17, 2023, due to her critical condition. Her recovery has been gradual, involving regaining basic functions like walking and talking. Though she has made significant progress, she continues to live with permanent facial paralysis, foot drop, neuropathy, and eye damage.
