Dunkin' Drinks: More Sugar Than Soda?
12 Mar
Summary
- Some Dunkin' beverages contain significantly more sugar than soda.
- Excessive sugar intake is linked to weight gain and heart disease.
- Experts suggest modifying drinks to reduce sugar content.

Recent discussions, including commentary from Governor Maura Healey, have focused on the high sugar levels in popular Dunkin' beverages. Nutrition experts note that many handcrafted drinks far exceed recommended daily sugar intake, with some containing more sugar than a standard can of Coca-Cola. For instance, a medium Frozen Hot Chocolate can contain 121 grams of sugar, and an Iced Caramel Craze Latte has 57 grams. A Medium Vanilla Bean Coolatta alone has the sugar equivalent of 9.6 Dunkin' glazed doughnuts.
These sugary drinks are not only consumed by teenagers but are a regular habit for many adults. Registered dietitian Chloe Schweinshaut points out that these beverages contribute significantly to daily sugar and calorie intake, often in conjunction with other foods. The Centers for Disease Control links excess added sugar to weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.
However, experts like nutritionist Sally Cohen emphasize that the risk largely depends on the frequency of consumption, stating that occasional indulgence poses little risk for most individuals. Cohen encourages consumers to explore healthier options, such as downsizing beverages or requesting modifications to reduce sugar. She also cautions against creating a culture of shame around consuming certain nutrients, advocating for a balanced approach to dietary choices.
