Ebola Outbreak: Congo Situation Still Serious, Says Health Agency
18 Sep
Summary
- Africa's top health agency states Ebola outbreak remains serious.
- Infection prevention and control data shows existing gaps.
- Congo's health minister noted encouraging signs and a slowdown.
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is still a serious concern, according to Africa's top public health agency. Data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) reveals persistent gaps in essential infection prevention and control measures across affected areas.
While Congo's Health Minister reported encouraging signs and a gradual slowing of transmission, noting a peak was reached in mid-August, the Africa CDC has cautioned against premature declarations. Director-General Jean Kaseya stated that the data does not confirm the outbreak's peak has passed and that transmission is not consistently controlled everywhere. He acknowledged a slight drop in infections in Ituri province but emphasized the need for sustained case decline before confirming the peak has passed. The agency remains committed to supporting the government's efforts.
