As of Sunday, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported a total of 1,003 confirmed Ebola cases, with 254 individuals having succumbed to the virus. The outbreak is primarily concentrated in the Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces.
Health officials noted an increase in patient recoveries, with 100 people having recovered since the World Health Organization declared the outbreak in mid-May. However, the rate of contact follow-up has decreased to 58%.
Approximately 6,386 contacts are currently under follow-up. Contact tracing involves identifying individuals exposed to infected patients and monitoring them for 21 days for any signs of illness.
Ebola, caused by an orthoebolavirus, has a high mortality rate of 80% to 90% and spreads through direct contact with infected body fluids or contaminated objects.
