DRC Ebola Outbreak: World's Muted Response

In June, the DRC football team marked their return to the FIFA World Cup after a 52-year absence, a milestone achieved amidst significant national challenges. Since May 2026, a virulent Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has emerged in eastern DRC, causing over 5,500 cases and 2,600 deaths across six provinces in the past 100 days. This epidemic is the fastest-growing on record, with a nearly 48% fatality rate, and has begun spreading to Uganda.

The situation is exacerbated by ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, where thousands have died and millions displaced. Many deaths occur outside medical centers, indicating delayed detection in neglected public health systems within conflict zones. Mistrust of health workers and attacks on them, sometimes related to funeral rites suspected of being super-spreader events, further complicate containment efforts.

The WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern in mid-May 2026, deploying over 160 experts. The Africa CDC and partners are also assisting with surveillance, labs, treatment, and supplies. India has provided substantial aid, including 45 tonnes of medical supplies and a $10 million pledge, and is exploring private sector partnerships and training initiatives for African medical professionals.

However, the global response has been notably subdued. Factors contributing to this include the dismantling of USAID and the US withdrawal from the WHO, alongside general donor fatigue. For the Ebola campaign to succeed in the DRC, a concurrent roadmap for peace is essential, recognizing that an epidemic anywhere can become a global pandemic if the international community fails to unite.
