DRC Ebola Outbreak: Community Voices Crucial

Community representatives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) emphasize their integral role in combating the ongoing Ebola outbreak. Survivors and local organizations stress that their involvement is critical, as they possess deep knowledge of community needs and trust.

The DRC's 17th Ebola outbreak, confirmed 100 days ago, has escalated into the second-largest ever recorded. As of August 21, the nation reported 5,290 confirmed cases and 2,516 deaths across 56 health zones.

This devastating epidemic is exacerbated by decades of armed conflict, which has created widespread insecurity and displaced over a million people. Frontline health workers are performing extraordinary services under immense pressure, often in dangerous conditions.

Progress has been made, with neighboring Uganda and some DRC provinces interrupting local transmission. However, sustained action is urgently required across Ituri province and five other affected regions. This includes expanding surveillance, improving clinical care, and deploying more community engagement teams.

To effectively turn the tide, response capacities must be significantly scaled up. Health facilities need robust infection prevention measures, and national and local teams require predictable, integrated funding. Cross-border coordination remains vital for public health action, prioritizing surveillance and information sharing over restrictive measures.

The priorities are clear: find every case, follow every contact, protect every worker, and ensure no community is left behind. International cooperation and sustained national leadership are essential to overcome this challenge, building on successes seen in Uganda and parts of the DRC.
