Ebola Surges in DRC: Over 3,500 Deaths Recorded

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has tragically claimed over 3,500 lives, with 7,258 individuals contracting the virus. The current fatality rate for this outbreak is 48.4%.
As of the latest reports, 903 patients exhibiting Ebola symptoms are receiving care in hospitals and isolation facilities across the DRC. The contact-tracing efforts have shown success, reaching 78.6% of those exposed.
This outbreak, which began on May 15, has affected seven of the DRC's 26 provinces. Ituri Province, identified as the epicenter, bears the brunt, accounting for 78% of all confirmed cases. The WHO Director-General has indicated that while the situation is serious, there are encouraging signs of improvement.
This epidemic has become the second-deadliest in Africa's history. A previous major outbreak in West Africa from 2014-2016 recorded over 28,600 cases and more than 11,000 deaths. The DRC is currently facing its 17th Ebola outbreak since the virus was first identified in 1976.
