Ebola Testing Halted: DRC Labs Out of Crucial Supplies
10 Jun
Summary
- Three laboratories in DRC have no supplies for Ebola testing.
- Nearly 600 cases and over 115 deaths reported in the current outbreak.
- Community engagement is crucial but lacking, experts note.
Three laboratories in the Democratic Republic of Congo have run out of essential supplies to test for Ebola, the World Health Organization announced. The facilities in Bukavu, Lwiro, and Goma are awaiting reagents to process backlogged samples, hindering the response to the escalating Bundibugyo species outbreak. This situation compounds the existing crisis, which has seen nearly 600 confirmed cases and over 115 deaths within the DRC since the outbreak began. Neighboring Uganda has also reported 19 cases and two deaths linked to the epidemic.
While testing capacity has improved with regional labs now offering same-day results, significant challenges persist. Insecurity and armed conflict in the hardest-hit provinces impede access and response efforts. Professor Jean-Jacques Muyembe, director of the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale, expressed disappointment that crucial lessons learned from past Ebola outbreaks regarding community involvement are not being adequately applied on the ground. Gaining the trust and active participation of affected communities is vital for effective self-protection measures and containment, he stressed.
