Drag Stars Boost Blood Donations in Halifax

Halifax is hosting an innovative blood drive event called Bloody Good Drag, spearheaded by local drag artists including drag icon Cin Diesel. This event marks a significant first for Nova Scotia, blending artistic performance with a vital public health initiative. The primary goal is to increase the blood supply while also spotlighting the positive contributions of the city's vibrant drag community.

The landmark shift enabling such events stems from Canadian Blood Services' 2022 policy changes. These updates removed historical eligibility restrictions that had previously excluded many LGBTQ+ individuals from donating blood and plasma. The organization has since apologized for the past harm caused by these discriminatory practices.

By replacing outdated screening questions with those based on sexual behavior applicable to all donors, Canadian Blood Services has fostered a more inclusive environment. Cin Diesel, who also works as a phlebotomist, expressed hope that this drag-hosted drive will educate the public on the revised guidelines for queer blood donors.
