Two Cancers, 20 Years Apart: A Mother's Fight
21 Mar
Summary
- Diagnosed with two different breast cancers 20 years apart.
- First diagnosed at 23, second at 42 with young children.
- Advocates for listening to one's body and early detection.

In September 2001, Natalie Henderson, then 23, discovered a small lump after a post-workout soreness. This led to an unexpected diagnosis of high-grade hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. She underwent extensive treatment, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and tamoxifen. Fertility concerns arose as egg-freezing technology was not readily available for her.
After treatment, Natalie found happiness, marrying and later undergoing IVF in London to have three children. For 19 years, follow-up screenings were clear. However, in 2021, during lockdown, she found another lump. This revealed a second, distinct primary diagnosis: aggressive triple-negative breast cancer with two tumors.
Facing cancer again as a mother of young children, Natalie described immense terror and a heightened sense of urgency. She underwent chemotherapy, a lumpectomy, and a double mastectomy with reconstruction during COVID-19 lockdowns. Now five years post-second diagnosis, Natalie champions being her own health advocate, urging others to listen to their bodies and report any unusual findings.
