Chennai Woman Gets Donor Meniscus
3 May
Summary
- A 58-year-old woman received a donor meniscus for chronic knee pain.
- The new tissue cushioned her knee, avoiding a full replacement.
- The donor meniscus was harvested from another patient at the hospital.

A significant medical advancement occurred at Rathimed Speciality Hospital in Chennai, where a 58-year-old woman received a new meniscus. This C-shaped tissue pad, vital for knee cushioning and stability, was severely damaged in the patient and irreparable.
Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. N Ragunanthan explained the critical need for this tissue to prevent direct bone-on-bone friction. Since the damaged meniscus could not be repaired, the medical team opted for a meniscus allograft transplantation. This procedure involves implanting a healthy meniscus from a donor into the recipient's knee.
The donor tissue was obtained from another patient undergoing knee replacement surgery at the same hospital. Surgeons meticulously harvested, shaped, and secured the donor meniscus using fixation devices, successfully restoring function to the woman's knee and averting a full knee replacement surgery.
