Dog Lick Leads to Quadruple Amputation
22 Feb
Summary
- Woman lost both legs and hands due to sepsis.
- Dog's lick on a small cut caused the infection.
- She suffered multiple cardiac arrests in hospital.

A 52-year-old woman from the UK, Manjit Sangha, has returned home after a harrowing 32-week hospital stay that culminated in a quadruple amputation. The ordeal began when a simple lick from her dog on a minor cut is believed to have introduced bacteria, leading to a severe sepsis infection.
Sangha's condition rapidly deteriorated, with doctors noting symptoms including unconsciousness and an extremely low body temperature. She was rushed to the hospital, where she suffered six cardiac arrests and numerous other complications. To save her life, medical professionals amputated both of her legs below the knee and both of her hands.
Her spleen was also removed due to the aggressive spread of the infection. Doctors identified Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacterium common in dogs but potentially dangerous to humans, as the likely culprit. This case highlights the severe risks associated with sepsis, a life-threatening condition where the body's immune response to infection causes widespread inflammation and organ damage.
