The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a critical alert regarding a voluntary recall of a specific lot of frozen dog food. Oma's Pride, based in Avon, Connecticut, is recalling Lot BB012729 of their Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe, a 6 lb bag, due to confirmed Salmonella contamination.
This recalled product was distributed to retail and wholesale locations, as well as directly to consumers online, across 11 states including Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The FDA reported that approximately 639 bags may be affected.
The recall was initiated after a consumer complaint led to product testing that confirmed the presence of Salmonella. While investigating the source, Oma's Pride reported three illnesses potentially linked to the contaminated product. The FDA emphasized that Salmonella poses a health risk not only to pets but also to humans who handle the contaminated food or surfaces.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection in humans can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever, with potential for more severe complications. Pets may exhibit lethargy, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. The agency advises thorough handwashing after handling the product and prompt veterinary consultation for pets showing symptoms.
