Doctor's South Pole Cancer Battle Inspires Millions
11 Mar
Summary
- An American doctor diagnosed with breast cancer at the South Pole.
- She guided colleagues through a self-biopsy during isolated winter.
- Her story inspires others facing their own health battles.

In 1999, Dr. Jerri Nielsen found herself the sole physician at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, responsible for the health of approximately 40 colleagues. During the long, isolated winter months, when no flights were possible, she discovered a lump in her own breast. With guidance received via satellite from doctors back home, Nielsen trained her male colleagues to assist her in performing a breast biopsy on herself. The subsequent confirmation revealed she had breast cancer.
This harrowing experience unfolded in one of the most remote and coldest environments on Earth. Nielsen's ability to manage her own treatment while continuing to care for her colleagues demonstrated incredible fortitude. Her story has been recently brought to light, resonating with many as they face their own health struggles. Separately, presenter Julia Bradbury, who discovered a benign lipoma on her back in 2021, is now considering its removal due to a small risk of developing into a rare cancer. Bradbury has previously undergone a mastectomy and chemotherapy following a breast cancer diagnosis.
