Disgraced Doctor's Return to Medicine Approved
20 Jun
Summary
- Doctor's license revoked for sexual abuse is reinstated.
- Reinstatement follows nearly seven years of license suspension.
- Strict supervision and conditions now govern his practice.
A Tecumseh family doctor, Dr. Haider Hasnain, has had his medical license reinstated nearly seven years after it was revoked due to the sexual abuse of a patient. The Ontario Physicians and Surgeons Discipline Tribunal ordered his return to practice on June 9, with extensive terms, conditions, and limitations. Dr. Hasnain's certificate was revoked in August 2019 after a disciplinary panel found he engaged in a sexual relationship with a patient who rented space in his clinic. The tribunal acknowledged his remorse and rehabilitation efforts, including psychotherapy and a $75,000 restitution payment.
His reinstatement comes with a mandatory 12 months of clinical supervision, starting with high-level oversight. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario did not oppose his application, accepting evidence of his progress. The tribunal emphasized that while rehabilitation was demonstrated, the practice of medicine is a privilege, and reinstatement must be in the public interest. Extensive conditions are in place to manage any future risk.
