DMT Drug Offers Rapid Depression Relief
16 Feb
Summary
- Single DMT dose significantly reduced depression symptoms.
- Benefits lasted for months, some up to six.
- Treatment well tolerated with mild side effects.

A groundbreaking phase IIa clinical trial has revealed that a single dose of dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a short-acting psychedelic, can provide rapid relief for major depression. This novel treatment significantly reduced depressive symptoms in adults with moderate to severe depression within weeks, with therapeutic benefits extending for months.
Researchers administered a single intravenous dose of DMT over 10 minutes, paired with psychological support. The study, which involved 34 participants, found that those receiving DMT showed marked improvements compared to a placebo group. Remarkably, these antidepressant effects persisted for up to three months, and in some cases, even six months, suggesting a lasting impact from a single treatment.
The treatment was found to be generally well tolerated, with most reported side effects being mild and transient, such as nausea or temporary anxiety. Importantly, no serious adverse events or concerning increases in suicidal ideation were observed. The rapid nature of DMT's effects, wearing off within minutes, offers potential advantages for clinical application over longer-acting psychedelics.
While the study's findings are promising, researchers emphasized the need for larger, more diverse trials to confirm these results. The study primarily included white participants, and future research will aim to assess DMT's efficacy against existing antidepressants and explore the role of psychological support in treatment outcomes. The research adds to a growing body of evidence supporting the potential of psychedelics in transforming mental health care.
