21 Oct
Summary
- Six maternal deaths occurred between January and June 2026.
- District Collector ordered enhanced monitoring of high-risk pregnancies.
- Health officials to ensure timely referrals to government hospitals.

District Collector Abhishikth Kishore has mandated stronger oversight of high-risk pregnancies following six maternal deaths reported in the district from January to June 2026. The Collector reviewed these critical cases during a District Maternal Death Surveillance and Response Committee meeting.
The deaths occurred within the jurisdictions of the New Gajuwaka, Bhavani Gardens, PM Palem, Balaji Nagar urban health centres, and the Gajuwaka and Sontyam primary health centres. Officials were instructed to maintain comprehensive records of high-risk pregnancies.
Private hospitals are now required to report such cases to district health authorities. Medical officers must ensure prompt referrals of high-risk cases to Visakhapatnam's King George Hospital or Victoria Government Hospital. The District Medical and Health Officer emphasized accountability for preventing further maternal fatalities.
Additionally, efforts will focus on improving antenatal care, early detection of hypertension, and ensuring timely access to diagnostics, nutrition, and birth planning services.
