NHS Hospital Transforms MRI Scans with Disney

Calderdale Royal Hospital has pioneered the introduction of Disney-themed MRI scanners within the NHS, aiming to alleviate the distress experienced by child patients. This innovative technology, developed by Philips, integrates famous characters, lighting, and sound effects to create a less frightening environment for young individuals undergoing scans.

This initiative is supported by research conducted across six European hospitals. The findings indicated that Disney-themed MRI environments successfully reduced pediatric patient stress levels by 43% and decreased pauses during scans by 63%. Consequently, Calderdale Hospital has observed a notable reduction in its general anesthetic rate for pediatric MRI procedures.

Paediatric healthcare data suggests that approximately one-third of the 180,000 children who have MRI scans annually in the UK struggle to remain still due to anxiety, often necessitating general anesthesia. The Disney-themed approach helps children remain at ease, improving the imaging process and supporting care teams in efficiently caring for more children.

Families can select from a variety of themes featuring characters such as Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Marvel superheroes, Star Wars favorites, and Disney Princesses. Parents have reported that the immersive experience significantly helps to relax their children, allowing for smoother and less stressful scan sessions.
