Dirty Dozen Revealed: Foods With Most Pesticide Residues
25 Mar
Summary
- Many fruits and vegetables contain pesticides, including 'forever chemicals'.
- Peaches, plums, strawberries, and grapes had the highest pesticide residues.
- EWG offers tips to reduce pesticide exposure while eating produce.

A significant portion of commonly consumed fruits and vegetables carry pesticide residues, with some containing persistent 'forever chemicals,' according to a new analysis by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). The EWG's annual report identifies the 'Dirty Dozen,' produce items found to have the highest levels of pesticides and PFAS compounds. Peaches, plums, strawberries, and grapes were among those with the most residues, raising concerns about potential health risks.
The EWG report utilized data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, testing 47 types of produce. Fludioxonil, a chemical applied post-harvest to prevent mold, was frequently detected, particularly on peaches, plums, nectarines, and pears. While some researchers consider fludioxonil a forever chemical, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency does not classify it as a PFAS compound, a discrepancy the EWG points to as a gap in oversight.
To help consumers mitigate exposure, the EWG has released safety tips. These recommendations aim to empower shoppers to continue enjoying the health benefits of fruits and vegetables while making informed choices. The guide emphasizes that reducing pesticide intake is achievable without sacrificing nutritional value, especially for vulnerable populations like children.
