25 Feb
Summary
- Middle-aged healthy eating lowers senior brain decline risk.
- DASH diet offers best protection for cognitive health.
- Vegetables, fish, and moderate wine aid brain aging.
Dietary habits established in middle age can profoundly influence cognitive function and brain aging in later life, a new study indicates.
Research published on February 23, 2026, in JAMA Neurology analyzed data from over 159,000 individuals, revealing that adherence to heart-healthy eating patterns is associated with a reduced risk of age-related cognitive decline.
The study found that the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet provided the most significant protection, with individuals closely following it showing a 41% lower risk of brain decline.
Eating patterns focused on lowering blood sugar or inflammation also demonstrated benefits. Specific foods like vegetables, fish, and moderate wine consumption were linked to better brain aging.
Conversely, diets high in red and processed meats, fried potatoes, and sugary beverages were associated with poorer cognitive outcomes. These findings highlight the proactive role diet can play in supporting long-term brain health.
