Neil, a father of three from Ilfracombe in North Devon, is preparing to complete his extraordinary 'Legends of the Lakes' challenge. This ambitious undertaking requires swimming across 10 of Switzerland's largest lakes, covering a total distance exceeding 300 miles (483km). Should he succeed, Neil will be the first person ever to achieve this remarkable feat.
He has already conquered four lakes in 2025 and has six remaining. His motivation stems from raising awareness for Pandas (Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections), a condition his son developed at 18 months old. The condition can manifest as severe obsessive compulsive disorder and tics.
The next stage of his challenge includes a daunting 54km swim in Lake Maggiore. Neil emphasizes the mental and physical demands, noting that some swims exceed 20 hours and require him to swim through the night without touching his support boat. He also highlighted the increased difficulty of swimming in freshwater without a wetsuit, which offers no buoyancy.
Neil is undertaking this challenge in honor of his son, Jack. He stresses that Pandas is a treatable condition, often following tonsillitis, and can be managed with antibiotics. His goal is to increase public knowledge about the illness and its treatable nature, hoping his months of dedicated training will enable him to successfully complete the final six lakes.
